The cost isn't excessive but at the same time I think we should consider whether it's really worth keeping the orain.org redirects. The main thing that should be investigated is how many users are actually getting redirected from there. If the number is close to 0 there is little reason for us to keep orain.org.

Orain.org has such a legacy behind it. While I'm pretty sure the amount of users for it is near 0, I'd ideally like to keep it and maybe redirect *.orain.org domains to their corresponding*.miraheze.org counterparts. All *.orain.org domains redirect to Meta apart from domains like allthetropes.* but I'd also like to research into whether we can economize on that domain by transferring it's registration to a less costly service like Namecheap (from which, ironically, orain.org was first registered on).
In terms of legacy I get that but we do have to remember: it only lasted 2 years and it shut down 8 years ago
In terms of redirects that could be fine but if you admit that the number of users is 0 what's the benefit of keeping it if we make no use of it? If we can get it cheaper that would be great but I'm not sure what marginal benefits we get from keeping it.
I don't feel strongly about this but just thought that it doesn't seem right to be paying for it and not really getting much in return.
Cloudflare also has a domain registrar business that is independent and segregated from the rest of their business; you don't have to subscribe to other services. Where possible, I register all my domains with Cloudflare as they give you the wholesale registration cost (i.e., what the domain registry charges) with zero registrar markup + the $0.18 per year ICANN fee. Where they don't support a specific TLD, I use Google Domains; they're not the cheapest, but the service is great and they're reliable.
That said, I agree with @Reception123's rationale and we should consider disposing of 8 year old domains, perhaps offering them up to to @Agent_Isai in exchange for a donation equivalent to what it's cost in domain registration fees the past eight, or a portion thereof, years.
I just mean Miraheze should migrate their other domains to a new registrar.
Cool URLs shouldn't change so keeping a redirect imo is a good idea. And +1 to CF. I have both my personal domains with Cloudflare (also using CF pages with them).
Orain.org seems to have been renewed until 2024, so the consensus seems to be in keeping the domain at least for now. Closing this task to clear the backlog until it can be evaluated again.
