Infobox language
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

I recently asked about how to add the infobox language template to my wiki. I am unfamiliar with wiki editing and the information on this page (https://meta.miraheze.org/wiki/User:Void/Infoboxes) honestly confuses me. If it's not a bother, is there a simpler guide to installing infoboxes?

Event Timeline

Well, infoboxes are rather complicated. Adding them to a wiki really depends on which variants of infoboxes you want, and where you want to take them from. The help page at User:Void/Infoboxes is setup for people who know how to setup specific infoboxes from the regular infobox.

There is also a guide at https://meta.miraheze.org/wiki/User:CnocBride/Installing_infoboxes_from_Wikimedia that explains things better, but I'll try and summarize.

  1. First off, you need to make sure that infoboxes are going to be displayed properly. Ordinarily, this styling (control over what is displayed) is packaged into templates to make things easier, however, in the case of infoboxes from en.wikipedia, the styling is stored on a specific page (MediaWiki:Common.css). This page is required to be added to your wiki in order for infoboxes to be displayed properly.
  2. Next, you want to add the pages that allow for bare-bones infobox usage. By this I mean the least amount of pages you need to get Template:Infobox to do something other than produce an error. For that, you need the contents of Template:Infobox, Module:Infobox, Module:Navbar, and Module:Arguments. These pages are what build the structure of the infobox. They also allow for it to be customized depending on parameters/arguments that are sent to them. They need to be added to your wiki as well.
  3. Finally, any specific variant of infobox can be added as well. For example, you may wish to include Template:Infobox person. However, this gets slightly more complicated than anything previously, because these infoboxes may be dependent on more templates than just Template:Infobox. This is why we recommend using the export tool. It has an option, Include templates, that will also export any template used on that page. Simply add the template's name (make sure to include the prefix Template:), select the Include templates option, and then click Export. Save the resulting xml file anywhere you like. Then go to Special:Import on your wiki, and upload the xml file. Make sure Import to default locations is selected.

https://meta.miraheze.org/wiki/User:Void/Infoboxes is setup to include the required pages (steps 1 & 2) so that they can be done as easily as possible. All you have to do is click the link at the bottom of the page to download an export of the required pages, then navigate to Special:Import on your wiki, and upload the file.
Troubleshooting: If you get an error that includes Script error: No such module "Name"., this simply means that you have to import Module:Name as well. If you get any other errors, or have more questions, please let me know.

Thank you very much. I followed your instructions and it has worked.
