Do yearly fundraising
Closed, InvalidPublic

Description

We should start doing yearly fundraising. This would help us raise more money to keep miraheze up and running.

We could do it similar to the wmf and have a page like https://donate.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:LandingPage&country=GB&uselang=en&utm_medium=sidebar&utm_source=donate&utm_campaign=C13_en.wikipedia.org

But we should have a nice site notice too.

Requires @labster approval and @Southparkfan

We discussed this in the staff channel and thought we should create the task.

@labster wondering should we start the fundraising using sitenotice? :)

Maybe I need to find another way for people to pay first. But yeah, I noticed the large chunk of server cost this month, too.

@labster ah yep, though most users could use the current PayPal account you have (works with majout credit cards I think)

Though we should think about fundraising using the sitenotice, as it seems the money is going down :)

We can use CentralNotice now that we have got it working!

@labster what do you think? Also dosen't pay pal allow us to hook into there system? then we could have something like donate.miraheze.org (similar to donate.wikimedia.org).

Nope, they don't allow it. That's why I disabled Extension:DonateBoxInSidebar.

Having a site notice on every individual wiki asking the users of those wikis to donate to Miraheze is starting to get close to an advertisement of sorts. While I see that Miraheze could be doing better financially, isn't there a possibility that having a site notice for donations would make people more hesitant to use Miraheze? If such a site notice were to exist though, I would support it for one day a year, and only that one day, unlike how Wikipedia pretends that it only does it for one day a year.

I'm not against encouraging users to donate to Miraheze; on Podpedia's main page I have a message telling the wiki's users that Miraheze is how the wiki is funded and that to support Podpedia they should donate to Miraheze. It's just that by looking at the historical financial data of Miraheze, it seems that most of Miraheze's funds have come from organizations. I therefore believe that the way to raise more funds for Miraheze is to not rely completely on users for donations, but to find organizations that need wikis for something, create wikis for them, and eventually one of them will donate.

Yep we will only be doing this yearly (if @labster agrees or has a different plan :))

What about just Meta and staff-controlled wikis (testwiki, etc etc)? (And we can contact some big wikis if they are willing to be the target of CN banner? They spend quite a lot of resources, so maybe asking for them to be generous and allow us to run a banner to fund the $$$ sounds not that bad (IMO). Running on the whole platform sounds not that good as Wikipedia tends to get a periodic criticism for running yearly-fundraising-ads.)

Oh that would be better I guess. :)

Little active progress + this is for technical discussion and this is a very social issue.
