Disable Wiki Export Feature
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

My wiki contains campaign materials and analysis of political party performance. This means that it is possible that someone might export it, set up a site with a very similar name, make subtle changes to the data and in short mimic my wiki, but with inaccurate information. I've got the wiki tied down in terms of edits and I let controlled access to add / alter information. I have no problem with people copying pages from the edit wikitext, but I would prefer to turn off Export option if possible.

I know it can be done in the LocalSettings.php, but I don't have the skills to go there. My limit is mediawiki and some java script.

Is this something you can do for me?

Also it lists on your available extensions "Moderation" being on Managewiki , so the user can add. It isn't in the list. Any reason?

Honestly, I don't see any use for it. Even if we disabled Special:Export. There are other ways to copy the content of a wiki, manually or with a BOT. One way would be to make the Wiki private (via ManageWiki) and only members can view that content. is the only way I see it possible. @Michaeldakin

Ok thanks Wiki1776. I don't want to make it private, so I'll live with the risk. It is a small risk. My Wiki is starting to gain traction, so it will become less of a problem once it is entrenched.

On the question of the Moderation extension. It is listed on the Miraheze FAQ as an available extension that can be added from ManageWiki. It isn't in the list though. Is it missing because it is not available/not advised?

@Michaeldakin

The problem you mention with Moderation seems to have been a mistake, it has now been corrected.

On the other issue, instead of disabling export (which as Wiki1776 says, would not disallow people from copying your wiki) you can instead change your wiki to a license which does not allow copying/editing/etc.

Many thanks for the Extension Moderation. I'll need to check into the license option. Where am I searching? Is it a server based license or Mediawiki? I want to be able to edit pages as would my other admins. It is quite a dynamic wiki, changing daily so I couldn't block editing and copying as a wiki wide solution.

@Michaeldakin Sorry about Moderation, I was just made aware that it was not in Special:ManageWiki because there are some settings that must be enabled manually. Thefore, we have to do that instead.

@John could you please give advice concerning a license?

You could restrict it to managewiki-restricted @Reception123

You could restrict it to managewiki-restricted @Reception123

But then you need to do two things on two platforms instead of two things in one file.

@John could you please give advice concerning a license?

I can only give advice re Creative Commons but that has distribution in mind. But maybe a NC ND license will work meaning content can’t be changed and can’t be shared for commercial purposes.

I'm relaxed to stay the way I am based on what you have said. It'll be fine or it won't be - but whichever I can manage it. I can close this to save you the hassle if you like.

@Reception123
I have set the configuration options I would like in bold. To in reality I would like the default in every case.

Parameters for LocalSettings.php

$wgModerationEnable
Default: true
$wgModerationTimeToOverrideRejection
Default: 2 weeks
$wgModerationOnlyInNamespaces
Default (empty array): moderation is enabled everywhere
$wgModerationIgnoredInNamespaces
Default (empty array): moderation can't be bypassed anywhere
$wgModerationNotificationEnable
Default: false
$wgModerationNotificationNewOnly
Default: false

This task was for blocking export feature, but it was decided not to implement a solution. Moderation was also discussed, but that is now been managed on T3505. So closing this task now @Reception123. Thanks for your help on the export issue and we can monitor Extension:Moderation on T3505.
