"Welcome/Start Editing" pop-up appears every time a page is edited on AllTheTropes

Description

This has just begun in the last week or two, and seems to be only the most obvious of what appear to be several related issues:

  • Every time a page is edited, or opens/reloads with an edit window on it, the pop-up which reads "Welcome to All The Tropes. Anyone can edit, and every improvement helps. Thank you for helping the world discover more!" along with "Switch to the visual editor" and "Start editing" buttons, appears.
  • The editor is always forced into source mode, regardless of how often you select "visual" and in what places you do so.
  • On Flow pages, the grey sidebar on the right which ATT defaults to keeping closed insists on staying open.

So far two users have reported this problem; it's unclear if there are others or not.

This issue is not unique to ATT, I've received a few reports of this previously and mentioned it. I think there is some issue with setting/reading cookies, but I have no idea what.

The welcome can be removed by disabling the option "Enable VisualEditor Show Beta Welcome" in Special:ManageWiki/settings under the Beta tab.

It's Visual Editor and personally an annoying 'feature'

The welcome can be removed by disabling the option "Enable VisualEditor Show Beta Welcome" in Special:ManageWiki/settings under the Beta tab.

Based on the fact I've seen 2 tickets including this on phab recently in regards to this (T4576) and how annoying it can be should we disable this by default. (If Site Reliability Engineering could get the figure for enabled v disabled then that might be a good indication (although people don't seem to know about the setting))

I note that the same tab on this page has an "Enable Popups Beta Mode" option, also turned on -- would it be advisable to disable that option as well, or would that break other things?

Is this still happening now? Both me and @Paladox have tried to reproduce by editing with VisualEditor and got no warnings.

As for "Enable Popups Beta Mode" I don't think that's related to the VE notifiation

I just came back to report that about an hour after I made the change the popup abruptly stopped appearing. (Yes, I was one of the users affected; I don't know if the other is still seeing the popup yet.) Not sure why there was a lag; maybe something was cached that it took that long to replace? <shrug>

Regardless, the issue tentatively appears to be fixed. Thank you.
