Phabricator username change
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Is it possible my Phabricator username be changed to "Universal_Omega"? I noticed a change username link, but said I am not able to because I am not an administrator. I want it changed for 2 reasons:

  1. I misspelled it in the first place (meant to type Carpe_Universum).
  2. My Miraheze account was renamed from Carpe Universum to Universal Omega.

Thanks!

Unfortunately, Phabricator usernames cannot be changed once they have been used. Unlike wiki accounts, Phabricator is not able to simply rename an account across the platform, and so renaming an account that has been used (especially one that has been used multiple times) would break things and leave missing subscribers/task authors all over the place. There may be other technical reasons as well, but this is the one I am most familiar with.

What do you mean it's not possible? I was able to change my username at Phabricator (here and Phabricator Wikimedia).

They definately can be changed

I was told by @John before that Phabricator accounts, although they can be renamed, that renaming them after using them would break things.

That's wrong.

Well, I wouldn't expect John to be wrong, but I guess anything is possible. Unless of course the folks upstream changed things with one of the more recent versions of Phabricator, since it was a while ago that I was told this.

If anything you can prob rename it in your phabricator Settings But im pretty sure if its connected to your Miraheze account you might have to rename your miraheze account first. (:

It's been done before and been possible since when Miraheze was a baby https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T110970#1719035

I would like another Phabricator administrator to comment on this per Amanda's concerns

That's Wikimedia Phabricator. Different instances have different policies and rules. I'm not going to argue about this - I am acting on what I have been told previously and if things have changed to make that previous information no longer relevant, that's fine, but it's not my fault if that's the case.

Do you perhaps remember where John would have said this? And I remember him saying you shouldn't delete Phab accounts, not rename.

It was in an email quite a while ago, so I'm not sure if I still have the record (doubt it). I'll go digging a bit in my archives to make sure, though.

This is correct. But, we can rename unestablished Phabricator users (e.g. those who don’t have a lot of activity or commits/other app interactions).

Therefore, this user can be renamed as requested as the risk v benefit is more weighted to benefit than risk.

Done, per John.
