I don't know if I am doing external embedding wrong, but I thought it most likely that the feature is disabled. Allow external images to be served by remote servers would save on server costs.

$wgAllowExternalImages is available as a setting in Special:ManageWiki/settings I believe that may be able to do what you wish. If not please reopen this task.
