Release status: experimental, but a PageSpeed Insights evaluation showed that an average of 3 seconds of access speed improvement is expected if the replacement with WebP is realized.
Access from Japan is slow, so even 3 seconds faster would be a significant improvement.
I actually was thinking of this extension also but I have concerns on resources, as it would generate 2 files for every file, one original and one webp so I'm not sure we should really do this. But I don't know. It would be a useful extension for sure.
It's not that urgent, and the slowness of the DNS lookup is more of a concern for me when I access from Japan.
The other day, I received a response from Reception123 saying "we don't currently have any cache proxies in Japan." I understand that this is for financial reasons.
The code all looks pretty good. Had a conversation with @Reception123 and agree that we can give this a try, but if it starts to cause issues with generating two files sometimes, we will have to uninstall it.
I will test and install this as soon as possible.
Just to note: I don't typically like to approve experimental extensions, especially when they aren't on Wikimedia Gerrit but the developer for this one seems pretty active and responsive.
Update: I tried to install/test this on test3 but there seemed to be an issue which I reported upstream: https://github.com/octfx/mediawiki-extension-WebP/issues/5. Unfortunately if that's not resolved within the next couple of days I'll have to decline this extension. Moving to low priority and stalling until that is done, as nothing we can do until then.
I was told this is potentially fixed upstream and just needs verification from our side.
Declining for now unless upstream fixes it, it doesn't seem like it will work for us. I tested the fixes, and it didn't seem to work.
I'm looking at the issue, can I continue to ask for the test? Of course, it's not that rushed, and it's okay to have free time.
Closing as declined again. It can be reopened once their fixes is backported to master so that we can install it, but in the meantime since it doesn't work this is effectively declined.
