Alternative display username for non-Latin alphabet usernames
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

For users who speak languages which use the Latin Alphabet, it is very difficult to be able to recognize which users is who when they have usernames that use other alphabets (Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Russian, Greek, etc.) and this makes communication more difficult especially because without a Latinised name it's impossible to know which user is who.

I am therefore proposing an extension (or an addition to MirahezeMagic) which would allow users with non Latin usernames to select an alternative Latin name that would display for all users that have their language set to a Latin language in brackets. This would of course just display differently, but the main username would not change in terms of links and all that.

So for example: の, は, でした would display as の, は, でした (Latin Name).

I'm not sure whether this is really difficult or relatively easy, but I'm creating this task so it can be looked into.

I would assume it's best to store in a preference and then have resource loader extract it.

I know there is no perfect hook on PHP-side for that: See https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T298425
Extension:Realnames implements a similar behavior but it uses a hack in my opinion.

This is not possible in MediaWiki at the moment.

This is not possible in MediaWiki at the moment.

In that case I guess we should decline?

That would be my recommendation. So I'm going to go ahead and do that, but if it were to ever become possible, we could reopen and attempt to implement something.
