Revert default skin change back to vector
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

There was NOT consensus for setting the default skin to vector-2022.

Agent claims that "Miraheze has a committment to be as close to default MW as possible" -- this would mean setting the skin to vector, since that is the true default and what is currently used on Wikipedia.

This also completely breaks backwards compatability, the goal of the change was to ADD 2022 vector, not make it default. This needs to be reverted to preserve skins and scripts, local communities can use vector-2022 if they want to, or if there's global consensus for the change.

Wikipedia opted to use Legacy Vector but MediaWiki.org left it as-is on Vector-2022 to showcase the default skin which is why (at the the English) Wikipedia still uses Legacy Vector.

In July, Wikipedia is also moving to vector-2022 as default, I believe. The MediaWiki default from my understanding is in fact vector-2022 now.

We made it very clear in every site notice or announcement over the past weeks relating to the upgrade of the intent to follow that default change. And there has been not much opposition to it, no one has openly expressed an opposition to it on-wiki at least, to my knowledge, and those that have expressed some resistance to the idea, have seemed to be OK with the change as long as legacy vector can still be re-set as the default again. We are even making it clear in new site notices on how wikis can revert to the legacy vector as defaults if they so wish to.

I'm also willing to provide some support if necessary to help wikis migrate scripts, etc.... to support vector-2022 if they wish.

As for the actual issue, since the skin is the default we didn't "set the skin" to a new one without consulting the community, we simply adopted the changes imposed by the upgrade (making the skin default). If the community disagrees with such changes they are free to make their opinion known.

Actually no. https://wiki.zs.naleksuh.com/wiki/Special:Version is running MediaWiki 1.38 and the default skin is still vector, no change to vector-2022

Well yes that is because you yourself changed it. As we’ve said nobody else is objecting to the change (except for maybe @Bukkit on IRC). Again we provided adequate notice about this. Unless there is more strong opposition, we aren’t going to change the default.

Declined per previous comments. I would suggest starting a thread on the community noticeboard and people can express their views there. Discussion should be on-wiki and not in a phab task.

@Reception123 Actually, even Wikimedia phabricator confirms that the default skin is not vector-2022 in 1.38: phabricator.wikimedia.org/T301527

We will keep Vector 2022 and allow changing the skin.
