@AmandaCath: Yes, it is. And the 'problem' occurs on Wikipedia too when I edit there in Visual Editor mode. It might be as designed, but I still find it a deterioration, because formerly it was not a problem.

I just have restricted the rights of the group * and now it's okay.
I understand now that the group User is not the default group for visitors, it is the group * that is the default visitors group. So I misconceived it. However, I think remembering that I could not create of modify a page when logged out.

From your comments I conclude that the user accounts mentioned on https://christipedia.miraheze.org/wiki/Speciaal:Logboeken/newusers are made specifically on the wiki Christipedia (not on another wiki), but can be used on other wiki's as well if they have been granted the right permission there. Is my conclusion correct? In that case it is strange that several accounts are made on Christipedia without any following request to grant a right to edit pages.

Incident took a short time (2 minutes?) before it was solved.

Thank you, John, for fulfilling my request.

I just tested it and found the problem no more.

@Wiki1776 could be a that the item is not refreshed and is taken from old memory (cache).

Error occured again and soon Mediawiki recovered:

MacFan4000's comment made me investigating the display by different browsers: Google Chrome (on my Windows 10 laptop) does not show the icons. Internet Explorer and Firefox do show them. Google Chrome on another Windows 10 laptop does show them. Than I looked at Google browser extensions on my laptop and discovered the cause: when the Avira browser safety extension for Google Chrome is disabled, the icons show up again.

Incident no longer exists.

Afterwards I see John's comment and that he found the same cause. Therefore, I will let the task open and disable the extension on the homepage. Thank you, John.
I have reopened the task. Why? After John's comments I made some research. I tested with three browers (IE, Firefox, Google Chrome) and on two networks. Outcome of the test:
(1) as long as I am nog logged in, there is no error and the homepage will be shown. As soon, however, I am logged in and turn to the homepage, the error message shows up. So visiters have no trouble. The error occurs in all browsers, both in desktop en mobile view.
(2) The timestamp in the error message changes with every occurence of the error, likewise the code between the two square brackets [ ]
Yes, old cache was the cause. Thank you, John.

In ITIL-terms: there is a "problem" underlying and causing the incidents. I too had some 503 errors on yesterday 15th of july. Happily, in one or two minutes Mediawiki turns back to normal functioning.
Jul 7 2017
And after one of two minutes back to normal.
Then some minutes of normality. Then, again, the error 503:

Thank you, guys.

I just had the "503 Backend fetch failed" error again
Jun 16 2017
"504 Gateway Time-out" keeps coming while uploading an image.
Solved (not by me), shortly after making the error known. Than again the same failure after trying to upload an image.

Anyway, thanks for your offered assistance.
Problem solved. The cached images of my Google Chrome cache were shown in stead of the last uploaded images. Erasing the cache solved the issue. CTRL+ENTER in the adress bar of the browser did not do the job, but explicitly erasing the whole cache. Sorry guys, I am familiair with chach memory, but I did not except it to be a possible cause of the issue, until I noticed on my smart phone that the images weer shown correctly.
Jan 16 2017
Hi Void. The issue is not solved by carrying out your recommendations. I have uploaded a new instance of Hazar-sual,jpg on https://christipedia.miraheze.org/wiki/Bestand:Hazar-sual.jpg, but that does not solve it: the first version remains diplayed.
Jan 15 2017
No, the issues remains. The two examples I have given are instances of the same issue: the thumbnail image is correctly shown, but the large image shown is the old image, having the pixel measures of the new image. The thumbnail image shows it new image version, but when you click on the thumbnail image you get to see the old image.

No, the problem relates to inserting an image while working in the Visual Editor (Insert > Media). I just tried it again on the search term "Johannes de Doper". It seems to go better now. I use "Bestand:Johannes de Doper". Yet some images are not of our wiki and do not belong in the search results.
I prefer to retain easy access to the image store of Wikimedia Commons.
Dec 24 2016
What I mean is that it is no longer possible to get only the images of our wiki in view. They are mostly mixed up with images of Wikimedia Commons. With the prefix "Bestand:Samaria" (for instance) I could formely get only the images uploaded unto our own wiki and whose name correspond to the search term (for instance) "Samaria". Nowadays I get a lot of images relating to Samaria, with of without the "Bestand:" prefix, thus making it much less easy to find a specific image uploaded to our own wiki.
